The origins of the Montserrat mountain range
The spectacular rock formations of Montserrat, which bear the name "sawn mountain", owe their existence to millions of years of geological activity. The erosion of wind and water, a continuous process lasting millions of years, has created a surreal landscape with bizarre peaks, deep gorges and hidden caves.
The monastery's history
The monastery was founded in the 10th century after a vision of the Virgin Mary. Over the centuries, the monastery suffered various misfortunes, including looting and destruction. In 1811, the monastery was destroyed by Napoleonic troops. The monks were expelled and the library and works of art were lost. After its destruction by Napoleon, the monastery was rebuilt in the 19th century in the neo-Gothic style. The rebuilding was a lengthy process that was not completed until 1925.
The Black Madonna, also known as 'la moreneta'
The Black Madonna is a small statue of the Virgin Mary. It's about 95 cm high, apart from the head and hands, The statue is made entirely of gold. Her right hand holds a sphere symbolising the universe. The Black Madonna is a symbol of hope and consolation for Catalans and is revered as the patron saint of Catalonia.
When is the best time to visit the monastery and what does it cost?
The monastery remains open throughout the year, with the exception of 25 December and 1 January. It's best to visit the monastery in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the crowds. While admission to the monastery itself is free, purchasing a ticket is required for entry into the basilica and museum.

By cable car
The cable car is a fast (about 5 minutes) and comfortable way to reach the top of Montserrat. This cable car has been around since 1930. From the cable car you have a spectacular view of the mountains.
